Overweight and Obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health.

Obesity is generally caused by eating too much and moving too little. If you consume high amounts of energy, mainly fat and sugars but do not burn off  the energy through exercise and physical activity then much of the surplus energy will be stored by the body as fat.

Obesity is associated with several endocrine diseases -hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome, central hypothyroidism, hypothalamic disorders.

Two types of obesity can be visibly identified, namely(a) apple shaped obesity-excess of adipose visceral fat also known as central obesity or the pot belly or beer belly effect and in it the abdomen protrudes excessively. It can have complications like heart disease, asthma, stroke. The causes for it are sedentary lifestyle, Cushing’s syndrome. (b) pear shaped obesity-people with this shape have extra fat in the hip and thigh area. It’s more common among women.

Frequent symptoms – excess body fat accumulation, shortness of breath, more than usual sweating, snoring, trouble sleeping, skin problems, and inability to perform simple physical task.

The best way to treat obesity is to eat a healthy reduced calorie diet and exercise regularly. The goals that promote weight loss should follow the acronym “SMART” meaning they are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.
Common causes of obesity- genetics, growing older, not sleeping enough, pregnancy.
